The Low Down on Zero Limits

It has taken a while for me to digest this philosophy, put forth by Joe Vitale and Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len, PhD., in Joe’s new book Zero Limits. It discusses the ancient Hawaiian teachings of Ho’oponopono. The gist of Ho’oponopono is that I take responsibility for EVERYTHING in my life. That includes not only what happens in my business and personal life, but everything that I am aware of… Then I go to work cleaning and clearing myself to heal my world. The story is that Dr. Hew Len did this on Hawaii and cure a hospital of mentally ill patients that he never actually came in contact with.

I am also currently reading The Diamond Cutter: The Buddha on Managing Your Business and Your Life, by Geshe Michael Roach. It is in reading this book that I am making a connection with how Ho’oponopono works. In discussing various business problems–such as employees fighting amongst themselves, and how to fix them Roach states:

“The fact that they are fighting in your presence, in your world, is something you have to experience because of an imprint in your mind. You fix your life, and your business and your world by fixing yourself.”

And that really sums up the message and practice of Ho’oponopono. According to Dr. Hew Len one fixes oneself by realizing that they are responsible for everything in their world and then “fixing” it by going through these four steps:

  • I love you. Self acceptance. Loving yourself.
  • I’m sorry. Acknowledge that you have created things that need fixing. Terrorism, murder, injustice, etc.
  • Forgive me. Forgive yourself for creating these things. Self acceptance is healing.
  • Thank you. Gratitude in everything. Thank yourself for the creating the good things and the ability to stop creating bad things.

Make these 4 phrases your mantra. Ho‘oponopono is “to set things right”. You create your world and these four phases will heal your world.

I was struggling with how I create my world. As I was recently watching the movie Pushing Tin, with John Cusak and Billy Bob Thorton I could see how Cusak’s character “lost his center” and started becoming “undone” because he violated his moral code (the code accepted by the air traffic controllers in the movie.)

He then viewed the world differently…. with suspicion. He lied and cheated so he thought Thorton’s character lied and cheated. He is finally able to regain his “balance” in life with Thorton’s help with a life transforming experience of a close encounter with a 747. Now just to be clear on this… no one needs to have a close encounter with a big jet to regain balance in their lives! The point and dialog behind the encounter was… to let go. By letting go we can listen to the “inner voice” or “higher self” and come into balance again!

I love when I find a reoccurring theme that is mirrored in several philosophies and teachings in may different and far flung cultures. It gives the theme and teachings credibility of Truth. Truth transcends the boundaries of geography, cultures, and time. It is unchanging and a common theme because we are all connected.
